A founder sees a USA Today press release placement for $69 and assumes there must be a catch. The same domain metrics on a guest-post marketplace could command four figures, so how can the press release version cost less than dinner for two?

There is a trade-off, but it is not the one most people imagine. Press releases are cheap because distribution is standardised and shared, not because every placement is worthless.

One distribution, many publishers

A guest post is a one-to-one transaction. Someone pitches an editor, agrees a subject, writes a custom article, handles revisions, negotiates the link and waits for publication. Every new domain starts that process again.

A press release is one-to-many. The release enters a wire or syndication feed once, and participating publishers ingest it through an established workflow. USA Today network properties, AP News partners, Benzinga and hundreds of regional outlets do not each begin a fresh negotiation with the buyer.

That removes most of the expensive parts of link acquisition:

  • No individual editor outreach for every placement.
  • No bespoke article written for every publisher.
  • No separate price negotiation with dozens of site owners.
  • No uncertain campaign where ten pitches might produce one reply.
  • The same distribution infrastructure serves thousands of releases, spreading its cost across all of them.
The low price comes from efficient distribution. You are buying a different product, not necessarily a bad one.

Why a guest post on the same domain costs far more

A guest post and a syndicated release can sit on domains with identical DR or DA and still have completely different prices because domain metrics describe the website, not the placement.

The expensive guest post normally promises a unique article, editorial context around your topic, a dofollow link, control over the target page and anchor, and sometimes actual referral traffic. Inventory is limited because the publisher cannot fill every section with paid contributions without ruining the site.

A release sits in a newsroom, press-release or syndication section built to accept volume. The copy is supplied by the client, the format is predictable, and the link is often nofollow or sponsored. The outlet can process far more releases than handcrafted contributor articles, so scarcity — and therefore price — is lower.

It is a real published page on the USA Today network carrying your brand, announcement and link. It gives prospects a recognisable result when they search your company. It gives search engines and AI systems another credible source connecting your name to your market.

It is not the same as a USA Today journalist independently investigating your company and writing an editorial feature. It is not guaranteed referral traffic, and a nofollow attribute means we do not price it as direct ranking equity.

AP News and Benzinga work on the same principle. You are paying for distribution access and authority context, not pretending you won an editorial endorsement.

Yes, when it is bought for the job it actually performs. A $59 AP News press release backlink can be excellent value for brand corroboration. A $39 Benzinga placement can put a finance or market-facing announcement in a context prospects recognise. A mixed distribution can add dozens of referring domains for less than one average guest post.

The value falls apart when a seller describes every syndicated page as editorial coverage, hides the link attribute, promises traffic it cannot control, or sells domain metrics without showing the actual URL structure.

The sensible comparison

  • Press release: low cost, fast, broad authority, predictable publication, usually mixed or nofollow, modest direct readership.
  • Guest post: high cost, slow, one domain, stronger topical relevance, usually dofollow, better suited to moving a specific commercial page.
  • Earned digital PR: highest cost and uncertainty, but the best result when a journalist chooses the story and links naturally.

We would not replace all guest posts with releases. We use releases to establish breadth, brand evidence and baseline authority, then spend the larger editorial budget on the handful of pages where relevance matters most.

How to tell cheap from suspiciously cheap

Low price alone is not a warning. Opacity is. Before buying, confirm the exact publisher, whether the link is dofollow or nofollow, whether the page can index, what happens if the outlet rejects the copy, and whether you receive a live-URL report.

If the seller only offers a spreadsheet of DA scores and refuses samples, walk away. Good distribution is cheap because the process scales. Bad distribution is cheap because the sites are disposable. The published examples tell you which one you are looking at.

Our dashboard includes real samples for each package and additional options that are not shown publicly, and the press release backlink FAQs answer the rest, so you can inspect the pages and attributes before making that judgement.

Quick answers

Why can USA Today cost only $69?

The placement travels through an established distribution workflow rather than a custom editorial pitch. One standardised process serves many buyers, so the cost is shared and the inventory is much larger.

Is a press release the same as a guest post?

No. A guest post is unique editorial-style content with stronger topical context and usually a dofollow link. A release is syndicated news content bought for speed, authority breadth and brand evidence.

Are cheap press release links fake?

Not when the promised page publishes on the stated domain and the attribute is disclosed. Check a live sample, indexability and the actual link before buying.

Will a nofollow USA Today or AP News link help?

It can help brand visibility, entity corroboration and buyer trust. Treat direct ranking equity as a bonus rather than the reason to purchase it.

Should we buy a release or one guest post?

For a new site needing authority breadth, start with distribution. For one competitive page that already has a strong site behind it, the relevant guest post may be the better next purchase.
